New devil monsters, and some restyled regulars...

2013 does not seem to be the year where I have a lot of blogging to do. My business is basically working on building up inventory, so duplicates of the same models for upcoming orders from my online stores, shops and any expos/craft fairs that I do. It's rare nowadays that I do anything new. However, I am trying to change up the colour combinations of my monsters to make them different. But today I have 2 new stuffed 'devil' monsters and some regulars I've changed a bit.

Groucho and Marx - Devil monsters ©Curious Little Bird

These guys don't have names, but they'll all be named "Bernard" for now. ;)

Gordon was the first monster, and I decided to play around with different horn colours. Lemon yellow horns and olive green fur is definitely a nice change.
Same fur but with pointy plum horns.
Are there any of your favorite monsters that you'd like to see with different colours??? If so, please mention which ones in the comments and I'll make some different combinations. :)

Embroidery hoop art... MONSTERS!!!

It's Wednesday and it's rainy in Montreal, and today I want to share with you a fun, new project that I finally finished. I had started these hoops a few months ago, and thought I'd never get over my procrastination and finish them, but then the acceptance of Curious Little Bird into Puces Pop (an awesome craft fair held several times a year, and super popular), had me inspired to finish them.

I will be selling each individual hoop at $68 retail, a very reasonable price considering I've put several hours into each and every one of them. They're all one of a kind, so if there is one in particular that you really love, don't wait until Sunday to come by Puces Pop to buy it, because it may be sold by then.

Any hoops I don't sell this weekend will be listed in my Big Cartel shop on Monday! :)

So without further ado, here are my hoops!

Thanks, and until our next post meet! :)

New blog series idea

Hey everyone! I know I've not been blogging much these past few months, and I'm sorry you're not getting any fun photos, or stories from me. But I have a really good explanation!! :)  My business is all about repeating the same patterns over, and over again, and almost never do I create one of a kind monsters anymore or really limited editions. Why, I hear you asking to yourself. Well for one, one of a kind dolls and toys take FOREVER to make! Those of you who do this will know. One might take a minimum of 3 hours. For someone like me, 3 hours on one thing is a killer, especially since I'm trying to make a living on my craft. :)

Anyway.... I'm totally getting sidetracked here. I put a post on my Facebook this morning asking people to give me suggestions of what they'd like to read in my blog, because honestly, after doing the same monsters day in and day out, there isn't much to talk about.

I did have one idea, however, and that's the reason for today's blog post. I want to run it by you first. It had me thinking about a few of my fans who love my stuff. The ones who REALLY love my stuff really love the stories I make up to go with each monster. And then it hit me! I thought it'd be really cool to do a weekly post where I take one monster, draw up a few illustrations (which would be a nice change of pace), and really expand that particular monster's story into a short story. What do you all think of this idea? I, personally, love this idea, and it will at least give me something to blog about, and you, my lovely fans, will have something to look forward to! Thankfully I love to write and draw, so this should be a fun challenge.

What do you think? Should I do it? If so, I'll have to decide which day it will be published on, and to make it special, the monsters may or may not be blogged in the order that they appear on my web store. :)

I look forward to hearing your comments regarding this great idea!

Underground art and music fair this weekend!

This coming weekend, March 9 to 10, there's the 'Underground salon of art and music of Montreal' being held at St-Denis' church in the plateau, across the street from Laurier metro.

The event is 11 am to 5 pm both days, and there will be art, stuffed monsters, music and more to collect!

I'm going to be there, along with my furries, fleecies, and maybe even a pillow monster.

Entry to this event is free, and we hope you can make it at least one of these days!

If you do happen to stop by, I hope you can adopt a loving monster into your home. :) I will have many to choose from.

I have some new cell phone sleeves that are of a different style, without fur, and lined with cotton/polyester for strength. These work well for going in pockets.

I will also have a few new styles, and some limited editions that are the last ones (mainly the pink furry one with the red branched horns).

Here's a collection of what I'll have for sale:

Plush Keychains - Various colours and facial expressions

Stuffed monster collection

Cell phone sleeve - New style

I hope to see you there!

New monsters in store!

I've noticed that I haven't posted anything new in my blog in over a month, and I'm sorry about that. There haven't been many new developments in my business lately. I've been working on restocking a few stores around Canada, as well as slowly building up my inventory for this fall & Christmas. Now's the time to do so, since business is slow.

I have some new monsters to show you!

This guy was a custom order for a customer who wanted zebra fur!

This little guy is made out of some new (and totally fuzzy) royal blue fur. I was only able to buy 2 meters, so he's going to be a limited edition monster. I haven't yet settled on a name, but I've been given some good suggestions...

Claude / Rain / Storm / Midnight / Blueberry Igoo / Night Shadow / Night Cloud / Steven / Igou / Night Urchin (or Urch for short) / Bubble

I think I really like Blueberry... suits him well. What do you think?

Also, in case you didn't know this (and I've been so out of it these days), I have a coupon floating around Facebook! It's offering 20% off anything in my store! You can claim it now, but the coupon expires at midnight on March 31, 2013 eastern standard time.

Have a great day!!

Chester is going to Hollywood!

Well I knew it'd be a matter of time before one of my monsters became a famous actor in Hollywood! :) Chester's going to be a background character in the show Shark Bites. A show about a guy and his plush shark friend roommate.

The first season doesn't have an official start date just yet, but shooting starts September 8th. I'll keep you all posted when the first episode airs! I'll be embedding a link on my website and blog, and probably add photos as well. :)

In the meantime, let's wish Chester a farewell, and happy trails to North Hollywood for his debut in his very first web series!

New Skull Monster!

Happy Saturday!

I'm so excited to introduce a new monster to the Curious Little Bird family! Let me introduce you to boy and girl Skully.

Boy Skully

Girl Skully adorned with a hot pink bow

Skully is a skull faced monster that has come to earth from the depths of Skullia, the skull city beneath Earth's crust. Skully has run away from Skullia because he's different. He was born with fur, whilst everyone else has regular skin. As an outcast, Skully came to the surface of Earth, in hopes to find a nice home where he may be happy, and perhaps even learn to laugh!

Happy Skully family!

Don't you just love the blue/black fur and skull face? I do! They're monsters from the beyond. Made with the softest fur, these guys are a limited edition monster as the fur is not purchasable once I run out. Also, these lovely monsters are available to purchase on my website, and will also be available at the upcoming Montreal Comiccon!

Have a great weekend!

PS: If you blog about my monsters, please email me a link so that I may link back to your site! Oh, and don't forget to add the credit please! :)

How did your crafty business come about? What made you want to start it?

My business came about when I made a plush monster for my younger sister as a gift. I love to give handmade things, and with the current economy sometimes that was more affordable! I then did a little doodle of the plush, and showed my friends. They all loved it! And started asking for their own paintings. From there I just kept creating. I am proud to say that as of summer 2011 I didn't even know how to operate a sewing machine, and now I am constantly expanding my plush line!

What inspires you to create? What supplies do you use?

My children inspire me, watching them get into things, their expressions when they see something new and exciting, I like to translate all of that to my Little Green Guy. As far as supplies, if I am painting I am a bit stingy about only wanting to use Strathmore watercolor pads, my brushes however I have had forever and have a strange emotional attachment to them. For sculpting I LOVE Super Sculpey, and my hands. I don't use many other tools while sculpting, I like the handmade look of my sculptures, finding a bit of a fingerprint here or there makes them original and I love that. As far as sewing I started off only working with fleece, and that is what my Little Green Guy plush is made of. But I have expanded to awesome fluffy fur! I am in love, my sewing machine doesn't always appreciate it, but he does a good job. I sew on a Kenmore, which I have hijacked from my mother, he is now mine forever, she just doesn't know that yet.

What is your favorite project or most memorable thing you've created?

Gosh that's a tough one! I really put love (as cheesy as that sounds) into everything I create and wind up falling in love with the project. I have to say my proudest moment was self publishing my first children's book. That was a life goal for me, I didn't care if it just sat on my shelf, I wanted to create something for my children and myself. Fast forward to now and my first print order is close to sold out and I have done several classroom visits. Seeing children enjoy my book gives me such pleasure I can't express.

Aside from crafting, what do you do for fun?

Is there anything other than crafting? Well, crafting is my “fun” but I like to DIY as well outside of Little Green Guy. Before my son was born I had a decorating blog, where I had $15.00 a week to find a few items and refinish them. That has taken a bit of a backseat now that I am working on my business, but I still love to design, DIY, and transform household things! My sons nursery was a recent labor of love!

I have to ask a totally random question, so here goes. If you won millions of dollars tomorrow, would you do with your little business?

Oh man! Well if I didn't die from shock I would TAKE THE FAMILY TO DISNEY! Corny? Yes. But they would love it. When we came back I would open my own store, without a doubt. I see shelves lined with Little Green Guy plush toys, sculptures, etc. As well as having a section for other local crafters. The only rule being everything I stock is entirely handmade. Maybe even a birthday party section for children, where they each can sculpt their own monster or paint a Little Green Guy! Ahh, possibilities!

International Monster's Day

Today is Saturday, and on the 5th of May we celebrate monster's day! Let's celebrate by checking out all the awesome monsters I found today!

Rainbow Pocket monster by Htavos Kooky Monster Art Shop (Etsy)

It's not the same without a Curious Little Bird monster thrown in there.

This little monster thought he'd celebrate by doing a little graffiti! Lucius the Graffiti monster by Boom! Plush!

Terloo by Stufd on Etsy doesn't think you should have eaten that 2nd doughnut this morning. He's disappointed.

Not all monsters are celebrating International Monster day. Apparently Terloo (right above) is all about criticizing people, and what they're eating! haha

Jasper here, from DKoss2 on Etsy is happy you decided to take that walk to work off that doughnut.

Lastly, Monty (below), thinks you should always read the written word. Now here's a monster after my own heart! He's just the sweetest, isn't he?

Monty the Yeti monster by Penny Pistachio on Etsy

Don't forget to celebrate today with the rest of the monsters! It may be cinco de Mayo in Mexico, but here it's International Monster's Day!

Store Revamped

Well, after deciding not to switch to the Sidecar theme on Big Cartel, I spent 8 hours last night making changes to my store to pretty it up. I wanted to add my own text for my horizontal navigation bar, but it wasn't as easy as choosing a font. Nope. I had to create each individual word in Photoshop, making sure that each image was the same height, and then with some HTML code plop it in. But not only that, I wanted it to be a link AND have a rollover effect (change colour when you put your mouse over it). Thankfully I succeeded in finding some code online, and it was so easy!

I've removed the header and replaced it with something cleaner, and removed the background images. I thought it'd be nice if perhaps my store was slightly different looking than my blog, that way there's no confusion. There were also these ugly colour bars that hovered over the main pages, as well as 'highlighting' each category (on the right sidebar), so I removed those as well.

Last but not least, Big Cartel finally got pagination working on the home page, and now I can show 20 items at a time, but the option to go to the next page (right below the images). Big Cartel had 2 options before this was implemented. The 'home' page would just show featured items, and then to see everything you had to click "All" on the right hand side, but not anymore!

Here are some screen shots of the changes:

On every page I even added custom font images. Now it's all matchy matchy, and pretty!

I hope you'll stop by my store www.curiouslittlebird.ca and take a look, and bookmark it for later on when you would like to buy a monster. Please remember this store, because my Etsy shop will always only have the same 11 monsters, and they'll always only be made-to-order. My store will always be full, and will be the only place I will add new items. :)

xoxo

It's Tuesday...Now What?

For the past few weeks I've been wracking my brain at what to blog about. I know a few people like the woman who writes the Dainty Squid actually keeps a blogging journal, and I'm starting to think that might be a good idea. She has weekly things, like Monday she talks about nails, Tuesday she'll talk about things she likes? I don't really pay that much attention, but I know she does things weekly. I'm starting to think I should too. This way I'll know what to talk about. :-)

Honestly there hasn't been anything exciting happening this month, hence the lack of posts. As a plush creator, I don't create 1 new unique doll every few days like some of the part timers I've seen on Facebook. I have my set, and I just remake those when I need to. Occasionally if I buy new fur (like last month), I will have a few new ones, but they might end up my regular monsters if they sell.

Here's a new monster I did yesterday for a customer. She lives in Australia, and she's my first Aussie customer. It's very exciting. This monster was made, and then my customer had asked me to make it with a happy face, so I kept this one hoping to find her a nice home. My Facebook fans have named her Cherry.

Alright, so on to today's subject. It's Tuesday. Tomorrow I have a 15 minute presentation at 4 pm of my business plan in front of this committee. I'm to sell myself and my project to them, to hopefully win this grant so I can grow my business. I haven't even started working on my presentation, and it's already 11:30 am.  I should really make breakfast (yeah, I know it's late but I haven't been sleeping well this week) and get cracking on this. I honestly don't want to do this, but I do want the money.

The biggest thing I need to do is advertising to get people to my new store on Big Cartel It's not like Etsy at all. Big Cartel is for professional artists to sell their products. Etsy is a community, and an expensive one at that (one I'm trying to move away from cause it's making me poor). Currently I have 3 Facebook ads circulating the world of Facebook, and I've managed to get over 100 fans in a week which is great, but how many of those people will actually buy something from me? I need to reach even more people. So money is what I need.

I'm really hoping that tomorrow's presentation will go well. I always get nervous in front of people. Wish me luck for this...

So there are people out there who blog regularly. They do posts like "What I wore..." and I find that kind of funny. It's funny to know that people reading these blogs like this. Nothing wrong with that, don't get me wrong, it's just funny. So I want to do a quick entry entitled....

What I Didn't Wear

Today I didn't wear my brown suede boots, my Levi Silver jeans with all the funky patches, a stylish t-shirt and a really comfy sweater.

----

I tend to work at home, and I don't feel like I should dress up to sit down and sew or cut fur. But yesterday I did go out to buy more felt, and I did wear most of what I mentioned above, except take away the suede boots and replace them with black and red plaid Rocketdog boots.

(I'd add photos, but it's so hard to photograph one's self without a tripod).

• • • •

As a closing statement, I'd like to post something cute. Of course it'll be of my boys, the kitties. :)

Littleone is sitting on said suede boots. I find this cute when he does this.

This is Squeak's favorite couch spot for relaxing.

I bought some pesticide-free cat nip, and Littleone just went crazy for it (he's currently rolling around in it). Squeak thinks this stuff is no good and would prefer the stuff with pesticides. What a weirdo.

This is Squeak's sitting time. He comes up here at night and will sit like this before lying down for a nap.

Have a great Tuesday!

PS: I would love suggestions of what you'd like to read about in upcoming posts. Maybe I can do joke posts like "What I would be wearing if I went out today" or something. Hahaha
